An outline is an ordered list of main points in a chapter or essay. Completing an outline helps a student to review the various topics and subtopics in a chapter. Such an exercise makes the student go through the chapter to find the missing parts of the outline. There are important reasons for doing this. First, it makes the student review how the chapter is organized into major topics and sub-topics. Secondly, and almost as important, going through the content helps remind the student by the use of repetition what he or she has learned in the chapter. Lastly, it provides the student with an organized visualization that fosters coherence.
